  7.     Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall "just never liked"
  8. using the word black to describe his race. After writing
  9. "Afro-American" in a dissent last week, he'll use that term
  10. from now on. Whether the other Justices follow his lead isn't
  11. his concern: "It's like what the old lady said when she kissed
  12. the cow -- everyone to his own liking." Jesse Jackson, who got
  13. the ball rolling last year by suggesting an alternative for
  14. black, applauded the choice, though he'd prefer "African
  15. American" because "Afro is sometimes reduced to a hairstyle."
  16. Marshall cited a source for his decision: "Afro-American is in
  17. the dictionary, and the other one isn't." Judicious.
